While I appreciate the technical and musical nature of his videos... Metal is just Not my thing. At least, the stereotypical 'Rape the bass drum uber rhythmic beat with extremely slow harmonic progression and then rape sweep picking!FTW!' metal. I realize that's a personal preference, but the points in the songs where it goes into that really throw me off.

With that said, Enjoy Paul Gilbert!

Paul is Amazing. He's a musician, not just a guitarist or rock star. This video speaks volumes to that.

The actual recording is MUCH better, every note has shape, direction and phrasing. He's also done a complete (or I assume at least the complete string section) electric guitar arrangement to the fourth movement of Hayden's 88th symphony. I have an insane amount of respect for that man, as a guitarist, as a musician, as a songwriter, and as someone who makes videos that actually HELP and EXPLAIN things to people... unlike other Swedish guitarists who just want to show of the most 'insane crazy arpeggios they've come up with'.

I listen to a LOT of Pendulum:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogMNV33AhCY is probably one of their most "mainstream" songs.

Another band is Machinae Supremacy, who goes from totally listenable music to weird video-game esque instrumentals with tons of "Sid," which is their kind of trademark. (They use the sid chip from a commodore 64, that makes weird sounds. :-P)

They managed to do a fantastic cover of Britney Spears' "Gimme More"

and I listen to a fair amount of Ben Folds, and other * like that.

I just got back from a concert, where we played this piece. It's noteworthy since I got to play the Euphonium solos, as they are one of the few pieces that even HAVE decent parts for us, let alone solos of that magnitude. I got a lot of really great comments too, so I'm really happy. Plus, it's fun as * to play!
